In-Person 12th Step Call List
This list is for 12th Step Call volunteers, other in-person volunteers, and bookstore volunteers. The volunteer answering the call to 509-624-1442 will assess whether a newcomer’s in-person 12th step is possible. If so, they’ll contact an in-person volunteer to assist the caller. It’s recommended that two volunteers go together for the 12th step.

Answering Calls
When you volunteer for the Twelfth Step List, you’re available to take calls from people struggling with alcoholism. These individuals are reaching out for help. The automated system will ring your phone simultaneously with other volunteers. The incoming caller number will be 509-960-5566 or 509-624-1442. The first person to answer gets the call. If you can’t answer, let it ring. When you do answer, press 1 to accept the call.
This cost-effective system allows multiple volunteers to be available during a 4-hour shift.
Types of Calls
Calls will vary. You might hear from people actively practicing the program, earnestly trying not to drink, or someone in distress. You’re not obligated to have long conversations with intoxicated individuals. It’s okay to get their number and call back later. Inviting them to a meeting is helpful. Picking someone up is a personal decision, and discretion is crucial. It’s recommended that another person be brought along.
Some members prefer not to give their last name or number to the caller until they’ve met them and assessed the situation.
Key Points
- Remember, callers need help with their alcoholism. Share your experience, strength, and hope.
- We are Alcoholics Anonymous and don’t affiliate with other programs or organizations.
- Focus on the caller’s alcohol problem, not other issues.
- Have a current meeting schedule handy
- Be prepared to answer questions about AA. Refer to pamphlets like:
Situational Procedures
- Protecting anonymity: When calling back, avoid breaking their anonymity with whoever answers the phone. Leave a generic message if needed.
- Giving directions/information: If unsure about meeting locations, be honest. It’s okay to say you don’t know.
- Despairing third-party callers: We primarily help the alcoholic directly. Refer friends/family to Al-Anon.
- Taking abuse: You can hang up on abusive callers.
- Habitual callers: Be patient and tolerant, even with frequent callers.
